My thirteen-year-old son sold his prized electric guitar to buy a specialized wheelchair for a girl in his class… but early the next morning, two armed police officers showed up at our front door. And what they revealed left me completely paralyzed.

He didn’t mention the missing guitar.

Not once.

Before bedtime, I stood in his doorway.

“Do you regret selling it?”

He thought for a moment.

“I’ll miss it.”

Then he smiled.

“But I don’t regret helping Maya.”

I kissed his forehead.

“Good night, sweetheart.”

As I switched off the hallway light, I believed the story had reached its happy ending.

I had no idea what was coming the following morning.

Part 3: The unexpected visitors

At 6:45 a.m., someone knocked firmly on our front door.

I hurried downstairs in my robe.

When I opened it, two uniformed police officers stood on the porch.

A patrol car was parked along the curb.

“Good morning, ma’am,” one officer said. “Are you Sarah Vance?”

“Yes.”

“I’m Officer Daniels, and this is Officer Cooper.”

My heart began racing.

“Is something wrong?”

Officer Daniels glanced at his notebook.

“We’d like to speak with you and your son, Julian.”
