A tragic incident has shocked the Catholic community in Ecuador. Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, 53, passed away after a heavy wooden cross detached and fell directly on him while he was celebrating Mass.
The incident occurred on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church (Iglesia Perpetuo Socorro) in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Father Patricio, a parish priest and member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists), was conducting the service live on social media when the large crucifix mounted on the wall behind the altar suddenly collapsed.
The ceremony was abruptly cut short as parishioners and observers rushed to help and call emergency services, but the priest succumbed to his severe injuries.
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil released an official statement confirming his passing and expressing deep condolences to his family, fellow Redemptorist religious members, and the entire parish community. Authorities and church officials are investigating the structural failure that caused the crucifix to fall.
