Callum leaned toward Graham.
“Still think she knew nothing?”
The judge looked at me.
“Mrs.
Ward, did you say those words?”
“Yes, but we were discussing repairs to the kitchen.”
Callum shook his head sadly.
“She changes every conversation after the fact.”
For several minutes, it appeared to work.
The judge questioned why I had not noticed the missing savings sooner and why my identification had been accessible.
Then Graham stood.
“We have the complete recording from the smart speaker in the Ward kitchen.”
Callum’s solicitor turned sharply.
“What complete recording?”
Graham pressed play.
My voice came first.
“The builder says the kitchen floor must come up.”
Then Callum
answered, “Do you want me to handle it?”
“Do whatever you think is best.”
The recording continued.
A door closed, followed by Callum making a phone call.
