My husband came home and said, “I’m in love with another woman, but I still love you, so I’ll just live in both houses” — I thought he was joking until he began packing, so I taught him a lesson he never expected from me.

“Give us one more thing.”

Callum snatched a box from the floor.

“You’ll both regret turning this into a war.”

“No,” Elena said.

“We regret believing you.”

The following morning, Ruth met us at Graham’s office.

She enlarged the photograph on his computer.

“Look at the laptop screen,” she said.

A banking page was open behind Callum’s arm.

Four account names appeared down the side.

One carried my name.

Another carried Elena’s.

A third said Kieran Ward Junior Saver.

“No,” I whispered.

Graham zoomed in.

The balance beside Kieran’s name showed almost nothing.

“That account held twelve thousand pounds,” I said.

“Birthday

gifts, money from my grandmother, everything we saved for school.”

Ruth placed the marked envelope on the desk.

“I should have come sooner.”
