For 4 years, I picked up my sister’s kids from school for free. One day I was 37 minutes late, and she screamed at me in front of them: “Not with my children!” Then she shoved me out of her house. I stopped picking them up. 11 days later, the school called me. Then my sister called 6 times. I turned my phone face down.

“We’ve had a difficult few weeks. But real family means putting disagreements aside and showing up when you’re needed.”

A few relatives nodded.

Nicole smiled.

“So here’s to my little sister, who finally remembered what matters.”

People applauded.

Then she handed me a laminated sheet of paper.

It was a schedule.

Monday through Friday.

School pickup times.

Instructions.

Reminders.

And a special note about Friday evening babysitting.

At the bottom, she’d written:

**Payment: Love, obviously.**

I read it slowly.

My sister was claiming under oath that she paid me $950 monthly.

Yet she was publicly announcing that I would be working for free.

I turned the sheet over.

“When does this start?” I asked.

“October 26,” she replied.

I smiled faintly.

“October 26.”

She looked pleased.

When I left, Ruby hugged me tightly.

“Mom says you’re coming back.”

I kissed the top of her head.

“I’ll always love you, sweetheart.”
