For 4 years, I picked up my sister’s kids from school for free. One day I was 37 minutes late, and she screamed at me in front of them: “Not with my children!” Then she shoved me out of her house. I stopped picking them up. 11 days later, the school called me. Then my sister called 6 times. I turned my phone face down.

Then another message arrived.

*“You’ll start school pickups again after the hearing. Obviously.”*

I saved everything.

The messages.

The document.

The dates.

The instructions.

Then I replied:

“Okay.”

By Friday afternoon, Nicole confirmed that her attorney had filed the sworn statement.

Mom’s supporting letter had been included too.

My sister sounded delighted.

She believed the problem was solved.

But she’d just placed her false claims into official documents.

And given me the evidence to contradict them.

That Sunday, we celebrated Mom’s sixty-eighth birthday.

Nicole hosted the gathering.

The dining table was decorated with flowers and a large cake.

The picture printed on the cake showed Mom, Nicole, Ruby, and Caleb.

I wasn’t in it.

I tried not to let it bother me.

After dessert, Nicole tapped her glass.

Everyone turned toward her.

“I’d like to say something about family,” she announced.

She looked directly at me.
