For 4 years, I picked up my sister’s kids from school for free. One day I was 37 minutes late, and she screamed at me in front of them: “Not with my children!” Then she shoved me out of her house. I stopped picking them up. 11 days later, the school called me. Then my sister called 6 times. I turned my phone face down.

The next morning, my phone rang at precisely ten o’clock.

“Ms. Kimball? This is Andrea Pruitt from the Wayne County Friend of the Court office.”

I was sitting at my kitchen table.

In front of me were the certified bank statements, printed messages, Nicole’s prepared instructions, and copies of the court documents.

I’d taken the day off work.

Ms. Pruitt began asking questions.

I answered every one.

Yes, I’d cared for the children since 2022.

No, Nicole had never paid me for that care.

Yes, five transfers had reached my account.

And yes, I’d returned the full amount each time.

I provided the bank records.

The timestamps.

The messages asking me to send the money back.

Then I submitted Nicole’s instructions telling me what false statements to make.

Ms. Pruitt became very quiet.

Finally, she asked,

“Ms. Kimball, did your sister believe you intended to confirm her version of events?”
