I sat on the edge of the bed.
“I do. But first, I need to speak to my daughter.”
I called Sarah.
She answered immediately.
“Mom, are you okay?”
“Sarah, explain something to me. How do you know Daniel?”
My daughter started crying.
“Mom, when Dad was in the hospital, that man was often with him. Once, I saw them together in the hallway. Dad was crying, and Daniel was holding him by the shoulders.”
“And?”
“Afterward, Dad asked Michael and me not to tell you anything.”
My chest tightened.
“Not to tell me what?”
Sarah fell silent.
“Mom, I can’t explain this over the phone. We’re coming.”
I hung up and stared at Daniel for a long moment.
“Do you know what she’s talking about?”
He sat down across from me.
“I do. But it isn’t only my story to tell. You need to hear it from your children too.”
