“Maggie, promise me you won’t forget about yourself after I’m gone.”
I had burst into tears.
“Don’t talk like that. You’re coming home.”
But he never came home.
From that day forward, I had stopped living my own life.
And now, standing before me was a stranger who claimed to have known my husband.
“Did you work at the hospital?” I asked.
Daniel shook his head.
“No. I was a patient too. We were being treated in the same department.”
The police officers explained that Sarah had called to report a possible scam. She had asked them to make sure I was safe and that nobody was threatening me.
It turned out that Daniel wasn’t wanted by the police and had no accusations against him.
“Ma’am, you have every right to decide for yourself whether you want to speak with this gentleman,” the officer said.
