The Shawshank Redemption The Complete Story of Hope, Friendship and Freedom

Andy Meets Red

Inside Shawshank, Andy becomes friends with Ellis “Red” Redding, a long-term prisoner known for being able to obtain things for other inmates.

At first, Red sees Andy as unusual. Andy does not ask for weapons or drugs. Instead, he asks Red to help him obtain a small rock hammer.

Red eventually gets it for him.

Over time, Andy and Red become close friends. Their friendship becomes one of the most important parts of Andy’s life inside prison.

Andy also discovers that his knowledge of banking and finance can be useful. He begins helping prison guards with their financial problems and eventually becomes valuable to the prison’s powerful officials.

Andy Finds a Purpose

Andy is eventually given a job working in the prison library.

He decides that the library should become a better place for the prisoners. For years, he writes letters to the state government asking for money and books.

At first, his letters are ignored.

Andy refuses to give up.

Eventually, books and money begin arriving, and the library becomes a much better place.

Andy also starts helping prisoners study for their exams. He believes that education can give people something that prison cannot take away: a sense of possibility.

The Prison Warden

The prison’s warden, Samuel Norton, discovers that Andy is extremely useful with money.

Norton secretly uses Andy’s financial knowledge to manage illegal money and hide transactions.

Andy creates a fictional identity to help disguise the money.

Although Andy is still a prisoner, he becomes increasingly important to the warden.

From the outside, it may appear that Andy has gained special privileges.

But Andy understands something important: his position is dangerous.

The warden needs him.

A New Prisoner Changes Everything

Years later, a young prisoner named Tommy Williams arrives at Shawshank.
