RIGHT AFTER OUR DIVORCE, MY MOTHER IN LAW BLOCKED THE DOOR. “DON’T EVER STEP FOOT IN MY HOUSE AGAIN, I SMILED. ACTUALLY… I ALREADY SOLD THIS HOUSE… AND YOUR SON WAS JUST FIRED AS CEO..

“It wasn’t your home.”

She struck the doorframe with her palm. “My husband bought this house thirty years ago!”

“And refinanced it repeatedly. Daniel pledged it during the restructuring. My company acquired the secured note after default. The settlement confirmed title. Your lawyers received notice.”

She blinked.

“They never told me.”

“Then call them.”

Before she could respond, a black SUV arrived.

Daniel jumped out, followed by Claire.

His tie hung loose, his face flushed.

“You sent the board those files,” he shouted.

“Yes.”

“You destroyed my career!”

I stepped down from the porch.

“No, Daniel. I documented it.”

Claire crossed her arms. “You think you’re clever?”

I met her gaze.

“Your brother’s invoices were especially helpful.”

Her confidence disappeared.

That was when Daniel finally understood.

He hadn’t divorced a helpless wife.

He’d divorced the only person who knew precisely where all his secrets were hidden.
