Part 2: I saved a mother and her child from a fire and got fired — what I saw on my doorstep the next morning made me burst into tears.

For the first time, Greg looked truly afraid.

Not embarrassed.

Not angry.

Afraid.

“How much?” Emily asked quietly.Richard looked at her, then at me.

“Potentially a great deal.”

Greg laughed suddenly.

It sounded forced.

“This is absurd.”

“Then you should have no difficulty explaining it.”

“You’re accusing me of theft?”

“I’m telling you an independent audit has started.”

Greg stepped forward.

“I’ve given twelve years to that company.”

“And if the books prove clean, you will have the opportunity to say so.”

“You know they won’t.”

The words came out before Greg could stop them.

Everyone heard.

Even Greg seemed shocked by what he had just admitted.

Richard’s eyes sharpened.

“What did you say?”

Greg’s mouth opened.

Closed.

“I meant the books won’t look clean because restaurant accounting is complicated.”

Richard said nothing.

Greg suddenly turned toward me.

“This is your fault.”
