I stared at him.
“My fault?”
“You couldn’t just follow instructions.”
Something almost made me laugh.
After everything.
After the fire.
After losing my job.
After coming home terrified that Emily and I would have to choose between rent and medical bills.
Greg still believed obedience was the center of the world.
“I saw a child trapped in a burning building.”
“And emergency workers were coming!”
“But they weren’t there yet.”
“You had a job.”
“So did you.”
His expression changed.I continued.
“Your job was to manage people. You treated us like we were equipment.”
“That’s easy to say now that everyone has decided you’re some kind of hero.”
I looked at the crowd.
Then at Kevin, standing on the porch wearing his new sneakers.
“No.”
I looked back at Greg.
“It was easy to say yesterday too. I just didn’t have the courage.”
