Part 2: I saved a mother and her child from a fire and got fired — what I saw on my doorstep the next morning made me burst into tears.

The crowd murmured.

I didn’t understand half of what was happening.

But Greg did.

His face had gone completely white.

Richard continued.

“As of this morning, I am the controlling shareholder.”

Greg looked toward the ground.

Then at me.

Then back at Richard.

“You did all of this over one employee?”

Richard’s expression changed.

“No.”

A long pause.

“I did this because what happened to him showed me what had been happening in that company without my knowledge.”

Greg’s face tightened.

Richard held out his hand.

The man with the briefcase passed him another folder.

Richard opened it.

“Unpaid overtime.”

Greg said nothing.

“Altered timecards.”

Still nothing.

“Employees told to clock out and continue cleaning.”

My chest tightened.

I had done that.Dozens of times.

Sometimes forty minutes.

Sometimes more than an hour.

Greg had always called it helping the team.

Richard kept reading.

“Tips withheld to cover customer walkouts.”
