Part 2: I saved a mother and her child from a fire and got fired — what I saw on my doorstep the next morning made me burst into tears.

“I went back to the restaurant.”

Greg looked at her.

She continued.“I wanted to know why the man who carried my son through smoke was being fired for it.”

Greg rubbed his forehead.

“You don’t understand the staffing situation.”

“I understand perfectly.”

Her voice trembled.

“You told my husband that if anyone had gone into that building, they were an idiot.”

Greg went pale.

Richard turned slowly toward him.

“You said that?”

Greg looked around at the phones pointed toward him.

“I was emotional.”

“So was my daughter.”

“That’s not what I meant.”

“What did you mean?”

Greg didn’t answer.

A baby kicked beneath Emily’s shirt.

She instinctively placed one hand over her stomach.

I noticed Richard notice.

His expression softened for half a second.

Then he looked back at Greg.

“You told this man he was disposable.”

Greg exhaled sharply.

“I run a restaurant. Sometimes difficult decisions have to be made.”
