“A fire.”
“And you saw my daughter and grandson trapped?”
“Yes.”
“What did you do?”
I felt uncomfortable answering with everyone watching.
“I ran over.”
“You entered the building?”
“The hallway, yes.”
“Twice?”
I glanced at his daughter.
She answered for me.
“He went back for Noah.”
The boy beside her looked down shyly.
Richard’s jaw tightened.
Greg shifted his weight.
“Mr. Caldwell, nobody is questioning what he did. It was admirable. But I had sixty customers in the restaurant, a short kitchen staff, and—”
Richard finally turned.
“Did you call emergency services?”
Greg blinked.“What?”
“When you saw the fire, did you call emergency services?”
“I assumed someone already had.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Did you help evacuate the sidewalk?”
“No.”
“Did you send anyone to assist?”
“That wasn’t our responsibility.”
Richard stared at him.
“But punishing the one employee who did help was?”
Greg’s mouth tightened.
