Part 2: I saved a mother and her child from a fire and got fired — what I saw on my doorstep the next morning made me burst into tears.

“This is not the place.”

Richard looked around.“I think this is exactly the place.”

Something inside me shifted.

Twenty-four hours ago, Greg had stood behind the restaurant near the dumpster and told me I was finished.

No warning.

No final paycheck in hand.

No concern that my wife was pregnant.

No concern that my son needed new shoes because the soles of his old ones had split.

I had been fired because I left my shift to run into a burning apartment building.

Greg had called it abandonment of duty.

Now he was standing on my lawn looking like he was the one about to lose everything.

Richard turned toward me.

“Did Greg explain why he fired you?”

I nodded.

“He said I left during the dinner rush without permission.”

Greg quickly interrupted.

“That is what happened.”

Richard didn’t look at him.

“And what had happened across the street?”
