He handed me a receipt.
The wheelchair was ready for pickup.
“Can we take it to Maya tomorrow?” he asked. “I want her to know somebody cares.”
Part 2: A gift that changed everything
The following afternoon, Julian and I drove to the medical equipment supplier.
The wheelchair was lightweight, adjustable, and designed for independent movement.
A staff member explained its features and showed us how the different components worked.
Julian listened to every word.
He wanted to make sure Maya would be comfortable.
After collecting the wheelchair, we drove to her family’s small house on Oak Street.
Julian looked nervous as we approached the front door.
“What if she doesn’t want it?” he whispered.
“Then we’ll respect her decision,” I told him. “This is a gift, not an obligation.”
He nodded and knocked.
Maya appeared in the doorway, seated in her old wheelchair.
Her face brightened when she recognized Julian.
