There was a pause long enough to make my heartbeat audible in my ears.
“Ms. Bennett, I think it would be better if I emailed you a complete copy of the intake file.”
“What is in it?”
“Mostly notes.”
“Mostly?”
“One document.”
“What document?”
“It appears to be an unsigned draft letter regarding title transfer.”
I stared at Michael.
“I never drafted any letter,” he whispered.
“There is no executed transfer, and we never treated it as one. But the draft was included with the materials we received.”
“Who sent it?”
“I’ll confirm before I say anything inaccurate.”
“Please email everything to me.”
“I will.”
Michael looked shaken.
“I didn’t know.”
“I believe you.”
“That does not fix anything.”
“I know.”
An email arrived. It was written in the first person. I, Emily Bennett, intend to add my husband, Michael Bennett, to the title of the residential property located at Cloudview Towers, Unit 2902… Too formal for Linda. At the bottom were two blank signature lines. I checked the document properties. BENNETT, MICHAEL R. Michael stared at the screen.
