“Why did you get the condo valued?”
It told me everything.
“How did you know?”
“I looked at the shared account.”
“Emily.”
“What were you planning?”
“Nothing.”
“Then why did you pay almost five hundred dollars for an equity review?”
“I was exploring options.”
“What options?”
“For us.”
“Michael.”
“There’s a development opportunity in Evanston.”
“My company is partnering with a private investment group. They’re buying two adjacent parcels and building a mixed-use property.”
“I know.”
“You know?”
“You talked about it at dinner.”
“That was before I knew employees could invest.”
“How much?”
“Two hundred fifty thousand.”
“You wanted to borrow against my condo.”
“Our condo.”
“No.”
“Not today. Do not call it that today.”
He looked away.
“I thought if we could access some of the equity—”
“There is no ‘we’ accessing anything. The property is mine.”
“We’re married.”
“And you knew that was the legal reality before we got married.”
