After the children went home, Kieran found the old weekly calendar Callum had once used to divide our lives.
Monday through Wednesday had been marked in blue.
Thursday through Sunday were red.
“Do we need this?” he asked.
“No.”
He tore it down and turned the blank side toward us.
“Can we make a new one?”
Vivian handed him a green marker.
“What should we put on it?”
Kieran drew a house in the center.
Then he added me beside it, himself
holding my hand, and a door painted bright yellow.
“Who is the empty space for?” I asked.
“Anyone who tells the truth before they come in.”
I kissed the top of his head.
Vivian placed one gentle hand on my shoulder, and together we pinned the picture where the old calendar had been.
Our home no longer belonged to a schedule, a lie, or a man who thought love could be divided into shifts; it belonged to the people who had learned that truth was the only key worth keeping.None of this happened because of you.”
