My husband came home and said, “I’m in love with another woman, but I still love you, so I’ll just live in both houses” — I thought he was joking until he began packing, so I taught him a lesson he never expected from me.

“Then why did he say you knew?”

“To make you turn against

me before I could testify.”

Graham examined the form.

“The witness signature belongs to an employee at Callum’s office.”

Elena unlocked her phone.

“Callum sent me a message about insurance once.

I thought he meant the policy on my house.”

She found it and handed the phone to Graham.

The message read: When everything is settled, you’ll be protected and Tessa will have no reason to contact us.

“He made each lie sound like a promise,” Elena said.

“And each promise hid another lie.”

My phone rang.

It was Northbridge Lending.

“Mrs.

Ward,” Helen said, “our fraud team has accepted that you did not authorize the guarantee.

The charge against your home is being removed today.”

I pressed the speaker button.
