I married my high school sweetheart at 73 — after his funeral, his lawyer knocked on my door and said: “You walked right into his TRAP.

The letters.

There are nine of them and they are from 1970, 1971, 1972 and one from the April of 1974.

And all nine came back to him.

And I have let people assume that this is because he had the wrong address or because the post was what it was.

I moved flats at Cantrell in the September of 1972.

And I did not send him the new one.

And the first four reached me at the old place before that, in 1970 and 1971, and I read all four and I answered two.

And then I stopped.

And I have been telling the whole of this, since the April of last year, as a story about two people who were kept apart.

Nothing kept us apart. I had four letters in my hand at twenty years old and I answered two of them and then I got on with my life, which is what people do at twenty and which I would not take back.
