Twelve weeks.

Sixteen.

Twenty.

Twenty-four.

The baby kept developing normally.

And I felt better than anyone expected.

We were having a boy.

For the first time since losing Emily, I allowed myself to imagine a future again.

Then came the appointment that was supposed to be completely routine.

Thomas sat beside me while the ultrasound technician moved the probe across my stomach.

“There’s your little boy,” she said.

I laughed when I saw him move on the screen.

Thomas leaned closer.

“Already restless like you.”

The technician smiled.

Then suddenly, she stopped.

Her eyes narrowed.

She moved the probe again.

Her smile disappeared.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“The baby looks fine.”

But she kept staring at the screen.

“Then what are you looking at?”

She did not answer.

She only said,

“I’m going to get the doctor.”

Then she walked out.

Thomas squeezed my hand.

A few minutes later, my doctor came in carrying a folder.

He looked at the ultrasound.

Then at me.

Then back at the screen.

“The baby looks healthy,” he said.

I almost cried from relief.

But he was not smiling.

Instead, he turned toward Thomas.

“Could you step outside for a moment?”

My heart started pounding.

“No,” I said immediately. “If you found something, he stays.”

The doctor looked at me for a moment.

Then he nodded slowly.

He pulled his chair closer

and pointed toward the edge of the image.

There was a dark shape.

“What is that?” I whispered.

“We weren’t looking for it,” he said. “But the imaging showed something near your kidney.”

My mouth went dry.

“A tumor?”

“We can’t say that yet. We need more tests.”

Within days, I had additional scans, blood tests, and specialist consultations.

I barely slept.

Every time I closed my eyes, I remembered Emily’s final days.

She had been fifteen when she died.

Before that, she had always been healthy, energetic, and curious.

Then one afternoon, she began complaining of a terrible headache.

What no one realized at first was that she had an undetected brain condition.
