A moment later, the front door closed.
Ryan returned to the dining room.
“What have you done?”
I remained seated.
“You’ve destroyed my career!” he shouted. “How are we supposed to support our daughters now?”
I felt a sharp twist of fear.
It was the same question I’d been asking myself for days.
Gerald shook his head.
“You’ve put your whole family at risk just to punish him.”
I stood and picked up my purse.
“I’m leaving. The girls are already with Dana.”
Ryan stared at me.
“For how long?”
“She has room for us for six weeks.”
Gerald gave an incredulous laugh.
“And after that? You have two babies, Claire. You can’t make decisions based entirely on your feelings.”
“I’m aware of that,” I replied. “That’s why I’ve gone back to work and arranged childcare. I’m trying to build a future for my daughters.”
