Daniel pushed his chair back.
“Mom, stop.”
I closed the laptop.
He stared at the floor.
“She married me anyway.”
I didn’t know what to say.
At midnight, Mark texted.
Working late. Don’t wait up.
Daniel read it.
“Answer him.”
“What do I say?”
“Say okay.”
I did.
Mark came home after one.
Daniel had already left, and I was pretending to sleep.
Mark showered before getting into bed.
That detail haunted me.
He’d carefully washed another woman off before lying beside his wife.
Then he kissed my shoulder.
“Love you.”
I kept my eyes closed.
The following morning, I called a divorce attorney.
Daniel contacted one too.
Neither lawyer recommended anything dramatic. They advised us to preserve documents, protect personal accounts, and avoid destroying property or draining joint funds.
That afternoon, Daniel called.
“Mom.”
His voice sounded strange.
“What?”
“I checked the account Jenna and I used for wedding money.”
