Daniel looked at the phone again, then sat down.
We remained silent for a while.
Finally, he asked, “How long?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did you know before tonight?”
“No.”
“You suspected Dad?”
I nodded.
“Late nights. Hiding his phone. Perfume.”
Daniel gave a bitter laugh.
“Perfume.”
Then he covered his face.
“I bought her that perfume.”
I rested my hand on his back.
After a minute, he said, “Show me everything.”
So I showed him the message I’d found on our shared tablet.
“Tonight at 8. Same place. Daniel’s on his night shift.”
The hotel footage. Jenna’s car. Mark meeting her outside.
Daniel stared at the message.
“‘Same place.’”
“Yes.”
“So this wasn’t the first time.”
“No.”
He glanced toward Grandpa’s headstone.
“Grandpa hated Dad.”
Despite everything, I nearly smiled.
“He didn’t hate him.”
“He absolutely hated him.”
“He thought Mark was arrogant.”
