“What is there to explain? Your family has made their opinion perfectly clear.”
“They don’t know you.”
“And whose responsibility was it to prepare them?”
Raúl opened his mouth, but no words came.
The car pulled away.
He stood in the driveway, watching the woman he loved disappear down the road.
Behind him, Nadia muttered, “You should thank us. We saved you from making the biggest mistake of your life.”
Raúl turned around.
“No,” he said quietly. “You may have just destroyed the only relationship in which I’ve ever felt completely understood.”
He walked away before either sister could respond.
The Message That Broke His Heart
Raúl called Raquel repeatedly.
She didn’t answer.
He sent messages apologizing for his sisters’ behavior, explaining that he had never expected them to react that way, and promising to speak to them.
There was no response.
