Then I crouched beside the children.
“I’m so sorry, sweetheart. I didn’t know school ended early today.”
Ruby began crying harder and reached for me.
I opened my arms.
But before she could hug me, Nicole grabbed her hand and pulled her away.
“Don’t touch her!”
I froze.
“Nicole, please. She’s upset.”
“She wouldn’t be upset if you’d done what you were supposed to do!”
Nearby, a woman named Brandy Stokes stood beside her white SUV, holding up her phone.
It looked as though she was recording the entire confrontation.
Other parents watched from a distance.
I wanted the ground to swallow me.
But I didn’t fight back.
I didn’t want Ruby and Caleb to remember two adults screaming at each other outside their school.
So I kept quiet.
Later, I followed Nicole to her house because Ruby’s emergency allergy medication was inside the backpack still in my car.
