For 4 years, I picked up my sister’s kids from school for free. One day I was 37 minutes late, and she screamed at me in front of them: “Not with my children!” Then she shoved me out of her house. I stopped picking them up. 11 days later, the school called me. Then my sister called 6 times. I turned my phone face down.

I’d changed my entire schedule.

Given up a promotion.

Started work before sunrise.

All so I could be waiting at the school gate when the bell rang at 3:05.

But one mistake had apparently made all of that meaningless.

The school had moved its early dismissal to Wednesday that week.

A notice had been sent home in the children’s folders.

Those folders went to Nicole’s house.

Nobody told me.

So I’d arrived at our usual pickup time, only to discover that the children had already been waiting.

By the time I reached the school, Nicole had been contacted by another parent and arrived ahead of me.

My seven-year-old niece, Ruby, sat on a bench outside the school office.

Her cheeks were wet with tears.

Her nine-year-old brother, Caleb, stood beside his teacher, gripping the straps of his backpack.

Seeing them like that broke my heart.

I immediately apologized to the teacher.
