For 4 years, I picked up my sister’s kids from school for free. One day I was 37 minutes late, and she screamed at me in front of them: “Not with my children!” Then she shoved me out of her house. I stopped picking them up. 11 days later, the school called me. Then my sister called 6 times. I turned my phone face down.

“Ms. Hale, you instructed your sister not to come near your children in September. Yet your sworn statement says you continued paying her for childcare afterward. Can you explain that?”

Nicole looked down.

For several seconds, she didn’t answer.

Then she abruptly changed the subject.

“My children need their routine! Micah has agreed to resume pickups!”

She pulled out the laminated schedule from Mom’s birthday dinner.

“See? She agreed! Everything is going back to normal!”

Every person in the room looked at me.

I stood quietly.

Then I removed a letter from my folder.

“I’d like to clarify my position.”

The referee nodded.

I unfolded the page.

**“I will no longer serve as the regular childcare provider for either parent.”**

Nicole stared at me.

I continued.

“I’ve asked the school to remove me from the routine pickup arrangements. However, I want to remain available as an emergency contact if the parents and school agree, because I love my niece and nephew and would never abandon them in an emergency.”
