Elena dropped the basket, pastries scattering across the entryway floor. Tears flooded her eyes as she looked from Mark’s cold, guarded face to Clara’s pale, heartbroken expression. “Clara, I… I’m so sorry,” Elena stammered, stepping backward toward the open door.
“Don’t,” Clara whispered, her voice trembling as she backed away from Mark’s touch, placing both hands over her unborn child.
In a single morning, the two pillars of her life had crumbled into dust. The deepest knife didn’t come from an enemy or a stranger from the outside world; it came from the man who promised to protect her heart, and the sister who had shared her blood.
