“And Thomas?”
“He tried to make me laugh every single day. He used to say that people don’t realize how precious an ordinary morning is until they’re in danger of never seeing another one.”
Daniel paused.
“One evening, he showed me an old photograph of you from when you were young. You were wearing a blue swimsuit.”
I remembered the photograph.
It was from our first vacation together. I was twenty-seven years old.
“He told me you were the most beautiful woman in the world to him. Then he became sad and said you no longer believed that.”
Tears rolled down my cheeks.
“He never told me that.”
“He did, Margaret. You just didn’t believe him.”
I fell silent.
Daniel continued.
“One day, Thomas told me that when you were young, you had carried him on your back at the beach after he hurt his foot. You were laughing so hard that everyone around you was staring.”
