I stared at him before lowering my head.
“Fine, Elias.”
He laughed again and headed upstairs, carrying his prize.
Once his footsteps faded, I smiled.
Finding that flash drive was exactly what I’d planned.
Over the following days, Elias became insufferable, strutting around as though he’d won a major competition.
During dinner, he even called Vance to boast.
“Remember that promotion I told you about? Well, my wife decided to hide my presentation until I agreed to spoil her. Can you believe that?”
I continued chopping vegetables while he laughed into the phone.
“Yeah, found it myself. Took me about twenty minutes. She actually thought she could outsmart me!”
After hanging up, he turned to me.
“See? Even Vance thinks you’ve lost your mind.”
“Glad you two had a good laugh.”
“Don’t be so sensitive, sweetheart.”
He also talked constantly about his expected promotion.
“A bigger office, better salary, maybe even a company car.”
