We finalized our divorce that morning, and before lunchtime, my former mother-in-law had kicked me out of the house. Just hours later, she hosted an extravagant $800,000 celebration to welcome her son’s pregnant new wife.

“So?”

I reached into my purse and placed one final document on the table.

“I own Blackthorn Holdings.”

Nobody moved.

Ethan stared at me like I was a stranger.

Margaret whispered, “That’s impossible.”

“No. What was impossible was continuing to protect people who were stealing from me.”

Vanessa turned sharply toward Ethan.

“You said she had nothing.”

Ethan’s voice cracked. “Claire, we can fix this privately.”

I almost laughed.

“Like you fixed our marriage privately?”

He lowered his voice.

“Think about what you’re doing.”

“I have. For six months.”

Daniel entered behind me with two court officers.

That was when Margaret finally understood.

The party wasn’t simply ruined.

Her entire life had changed.

One officer approached the musicians and quietly told them to stop. Another spoke with the estate manager. The caterer was informed that no further charges could be made against the frozen accounts.

Margaret looked around the ballroom as her perfect evening collapsed around her.
