Early Life and Beginning of Career
Tom Hanks experienced a somewhat nomadic childhood following his parents’ divorce, moving frequently across California. His passion for acting was ignited during his high school years, leading him to study theater at Chabot College and later at California State University, Sacramento. He eventually dropped out of college to pursue acting full-time, joining the Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival in Cleveland, Ohio, where he spent three summers honing his craft in classical plays.
In 1980, Hanks moved to New York City and landed his breakout role on the television sitcom Bosom Buddies (1980–1982). His sharp comedic timing caught the attention of director Ron Howard, who cast him in the romantic comedy fantasy Splash (1984). The film became an unexpected box office triumph and established Hanks as a leading man.
