The first punch landed clean enough to make my wife smile

I almost smiled.

Of course he wasn’t.

Nothing in my life was what I had thought.

“What was he?”

“Danny called him an asset

manager.”

“That means nothing.”

“In his world it meant something else.”

Intelligence.

I leaned back.

Melissa continued.

“Robert helped relocate me after Danny died. Claire knew. My parents knew. Everyone agreed it was better if I disappeared.”

“Why fake your death?”

“Because I had evidence about the network selling

pills through military communities around Norfolk. Danny got addicted through them. I helped federal investigators. Some of those people were dangerous.”

That part, then, had been true.

“What does any of this have to do with Claire stealing from me?”

Melissa began crying.

“Because Claire thought I had access to Robert’s money.”

I froze.

“She contacted me two years ago. First time in years.”
