My restaurant manager threw me onto the sidewalk because I looked homeless. But what I saw moments before he pushed me out made me call the police.
I landed on the sidewalk, catching myself with both hands.
The rough concrete scraped my palms, and the shoulder of my worn secondhand jacket tore as I stumbled. Behind me, the glass doors of my own restaurant swung closed.
My manager stood on the other side, laughing.
“Don’t come back!” Kyle shouted.
A woman walking her dog hurried across the street. A businessman walked past without looking down. Nobody stopped to ask whether I needed help.
I stayed on my knees for several seconds, barely noticing the pain.
Because just before Kyle pushed me outside, I had noticed something at the hostess counter.
Something that changed everything.
I had entered my restaurant intending to discover why longtime customers were disappearing.
Now I knew this situation was far more serious than poor service.
