Pinworms in Children: What They Are and Why They Cause Nighttime Itching.

*2. Common symptoms*
– Itching around the anus, especially at night
– Restless sleep, irritability, waking up often
– Sometimes mild stomach pain, nausea
– In girls, sometimes itching or irritation around the vagina if worms migrate
– You can sometimes see the worms: small, white, thread-like, about 2-13mm, around the anus at night or in stool

If you notice these symptoms, it’s a good idea to talk to your pediatrician or primary care provider — they can confirm it with a simple tape test and advise on next steps.

*3. How to prevent and stop the cycle*

Medication alone doesn’t prevent reinfection — hygiene measures are essential at the same time:

– *Handwashing:* Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water after using the bathroom, after changing diapers, and before handling food. Keep nails short and discourage nail-biting.
– *Morning shower:* A morning bath or shower removes eggs laid overnight.
– *Laundry:* Wash bedding, pajamas, underwear, and towels in hot water daily for several days after treatment starts. Don’t shake them before washing — that can spread eggs in the air.
– *Surfaces:* Clean toys, bathroom surfaces, and frequently touched surfaces. Vacuum bedrooms regularly.
– *Clothes:* Have children wear close-fitting underwear at night and change it daily.
– *Avoid scratching:* Cotton gloves at night can help young children.
