Relief rushed through me so violently that I almost laughed.
Then Robert continued.
“His biological father is my brother.”
I froze.
Robert had no brother.
At least, that was what he had always told me.
“My identical twin brother,” Robert said, “Samuel.”
I stared toward the corridor.
Yesterday’s visitor.
The man who looked exactly like Robert except for the nose.
Samuel.
Robert had a twin.
Thirty-four years of marriage.
And I had never known.
“Samuel and I stopped speaking before I met you,” Robert continued. “Our family considered him gone. I told you he had d/i/e/d because that was easier than explaining what he had become.”
Robert took a breath.
“I was wrong.”
The recording clicked.
“Fifteen years ago, Samuel found Evelyn and Daniel.”
My skin turned cold.
“He wanted something from Daniel. Something
Daniel didn’t even know he possessed.”
The tape became distorted.
I leaned closer.
