Daniel.
Claire.
Michael.
And
me.
Harold met us after hours.
He locked the office door behind us.
“You opened the storage unit,” he said.
It was not a question.
“Yes.”
“And Samuel appeared?”
“Yes.”
Harold sighed.
“Robert always believed Samuel would.”
I sat across from him.
“No more riddles.”
“I agree.”
“No more protecting me.”
“I agree.”
“No more telling me Robert had good reasons.”
Harold looked directly at me.
“Some of his reasons were good.”
“And some?”
“Cowardly.”
That honesty made me trust him immediately.
Harold retrieved a thick file.
“Robert came to me sixteen years ago.”
He opened it.
“He admitted that his brother had used him to move money between accounts. Robert initially believed the transfers were legal.”
Samuel had claimed they were temporary loans necessary to save several family-owned properties.
By the time Robert understood what was happening, his signature was attached to millions in questionable transactions.
