Full story: I slept with a stranger on my sixty-second birthday, and by sunrise he was gone. K007

“

Back up.”

Samuel’s eyes hardened.

“Your sister knows where it is.”

“No,” Claire said.

Samuel looked at her.

“Yes, you do.”

“I was seven!”

“You remember.”

“I remember Dad burning something in the fireplace.”

Samuel froze.

Daniel stared at Claire.

“What?”

“He burned the notebook?”

“I thought he did.”

Samuel’s face transformed.

Years of pursuit suddenly collapsing.

“No.”

Claire looked at me.

“But before he burned it, Dad tore out one page.”

My pulse quickened.

“Where is the page?”

“I don’t know.”

Samuel stepped from the porch.

“You’re lying.”

Daniel moved between them.

“Leave her alone.”

Samuel’s control cracked.

“For fifteen years, that page has cost me everything.”

I looked at him.

“Then perhaps it should have.”

He turned toward me with such fury that even Daniel stiffened.

Then Samuel did something unexpected.

He laughed.

Not happily.

Not sanely.

Just tiredly.

“You still think Robert was the good twin.”
