My skin went cold.
“What man?”
“He says his name is Samuel.”
Daniel heard.
He stood so fast the box fell over.
“Claire,” I said, “go inside and lock the door.”
“Mom—”
“Now.”
A pause.
Then my daughter whispered:
“He says he has something Dad wanted me to see.”
PART 5 — THE CHILD WHO HAD BEEN KEEPING MY HUSBAND’S SECRET
We reached my house in forty-three minutes.
Daniel drove.
I spent almost the entire trip gripping my phone.
Claire and Michael had gone inside.
Samuel remained on the porch.
Waiting.
As we pulled onto my street, I saw him rise.
My neighborhood had always seemed harmless—trim lawns, old maples, bicycles abandoned in driveways.
Now Samuel’s gray coat made the entire place feel unfamiliar.
Daniel parked.
“Stay in the car.”
“No.”
“Margaret—”
“This is my house.”
I got out.
Samuel watched me approach.
Claire opened
the front door behind him.
