Samuel seemed to drain warmth from it.
He stopped several feet away.
“Maggie.”
My stomach turned.
“Don’t call me that.”
His lips curved.
“Robert said you’d say that.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“What do you want?”
Samuel looked at him.
“My son.”
“I’m not your son.”
“Biology disagrees.”
“So do twenty-five years of my life.”
Samuel’s expression hardened.
Then he looked at me.
“Did you find the letters?”
“What are you looking for?”
“Something that belongs to me.”
“Then why did Robert hide it?”
Samuel laughed quietly.
“Because Robert always confused stealing with rescuing.”
Daniel’s fists tightened.
Samuel noticed.
“Careful.”
Daniel did not move.
Samuel returned his attention to me.
“Robert left you a little puzzle. He loved puzzles.”
“My husband hated puzzles.”
Samuel smiled.
“Then perhaps you didn’t know him as well as you
believed.”
That landed exactly where he intended.
I refused to let him see it.
