“Why was it never mentioned?”
“It appears Thomas instructed his attorney not to tell Mark until the condition was met.”
Emily thought of Thomas’s letter.
A man trying, in his final days, to communicate with a son who would not listen.
“There’s one more thing,” Daniel said.
“What?”
“The trust includes a letter.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“Another one?”
“Yes.”
“For Mark?”
Daniel paused.
“No.”
Emily’s hand tightened around the phone.
“It’s addressed to Mark’s future children.”
That evening, Emily sat beside the three sleeping bassinets and wondered what Thomas Carter—a man who had once walked away from his own family and spent the rest of his life trying to become worthy of returning—had wanted to tell grandchildren he would never meet.
And for the first time since leaving the hospital, Emily wondered whether some families were not repaired by forgetting their mistakes.
