“I was eight.”
Mark shifted Faith carefully.
“He moved into an apartment for three months.”
Emily sat opposite him.
“He came back?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know why he left?”
Mark shook his head.
“My parents never talked about it.”
He continued reading.
A minute passed.
Then another.
Finally, he placed the letter on the table.
“My father wrote that when Mom was pregnant with my sister, he became convinced he was going to fail everyone.”
Emily frowned.
“Your sister who died before birth?”
Mark nodded.
Margaret rarely spoke about the pregnancy.
Everyone in the Carter family treated it as a room with a closed door.
“He was working two jobs,” Mark said. “There were medical bills. He said he started spending time with friends after work because being away from home made him feel like he could breathe.”
Emily looked at him.
Mark understood.
“Yeah.”
He rubbed his forehead.
“He met another woman. Nothing happened, according to him. But he started thinking about leaving Mom for her.”
Emily’s gaze moved toward the blue folder resting on the counter.
Apartment brochures.
Emails.
Madison.
Mark looked almost ill.
“What else?”
“He says leaving didn’t make him freer. It just made Mom handle everything alone.”
The room grew quiet.
“He came home after my sister died,” Mark continued. “Not because Mom begged him. She didn’t. She told him if he wanted to come back, he had to understand something.”
“What?”
Mark picked up the letter and read one sentence aloud.
“‘You don’t earn a place in a family by being sorry you missed it.’”
Emily looked down at her hands.
The words settled between them.
Mark continued.
“He said Mom made him prove himself through ordinary things. Appointments. Groceries. Bills. Sitting with her when she couldn’t sleep. Showing up when nobody applauded.”
Claire turned away, pretending to straighten bottles.
Emily realized she was blinking back tears.
“Why did he write to you?”
Mark stared at the final page.
“Because he thought I was becoming like him.”
Emily looked up sharply.
“When?”
“The letter is dated three weeks before he died.”
