called him back.
“I handled the paperwork,” I said calmly. “The kind that reflects reality.”
Part 4: The Brigade Ball
That evening, I returned to the house to find all four of them waiting. Richard demanded money to settle the developer dispute, while Chloe accused me of being selfish and destroying everything over a house. Vance warned me that this could still be handled quietly.
I tapped my phone to stop the recording of their demands.
“You have exactly seven days to vacate my property,” I said. “After that, you’re trespassing.”
“This is my house,” Richard snapped.
“No,” I said. “It’s not.”
I left and checked into a quiet hotel room, blocking all their numbers. Over the next few days, the consequences hit hard: their car insurance policies were canceled, their cell phone plans were cut off, and Vance was pulled out of formation by military police, his security clearance
suspended pending investigation.

On day seven, the brigade ball took place at the base. The ballroom was packed with officers and command staff. I sat near the base commander when Evelyn, Richard, Chloe, and a tense Vance marched directly to our table.
Evelyn raised her voice, playing the victim for the surrounding crowd. “She’s trying to throw her own family out on the street! My daughter is pregnant, and she’s taken our money and cut us off completely!”
The commander looked at me, calm and even. “Captain Harper, is there something you’d like to address?”
I stood slowly, opened my clutch, and placed my manila folder on the table.
The commander read through the bank statements, the forged power of attorney, the quitclaim deed, and the JAG investigation files. His expression hardened as he looked at Richard.
“Colonel. Retired or not,” the commander said. “You attempted
to sell property you do not legally own using falsified documentation, and you are connected to financial fraud involving a service member under my command.”

He signaled the military police. Two MPs immediately stepped forward and escorted Vance out of the ballroom as hundreds of eyes watched in silence. Staff members quietly guided Richard, Evelyn, and Chloe out of the venue.
