Important Safety Precautions
Oregano used in ordinary cooking is different from concentrated oregano extracts and essential oils. The safety of regular medicinal use has not been established for every preparation.
Keep the following precautions in mind:
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Avoid medicinal amounts of oregano unless your healthcare professional approves their use. Culinary amounts are different from concentrated preparations.
- Allergies: People allergic to oregano or related plants, including some members of the mint family, should use caution.
- Medication interactions: If you take regular medication, especially medication that affects blood clotting or blood glucose, ask a healthcare professional before using concentrated herbal products.
- Stomach sensitivity: Strong herbal infusions may cause discomfort in some people. Stop drinking the tea if you experience an adverse reaction.
- Essential oils: Never swallow oregano essential oil as a substitute for tea. Essential oils are highly concentrated and can cause harm if used incorrectly.
- Children: Do not give concentrated herbal preparations to children without professional guidance.
Oregano tea should not replace prescribed medication or professional treatment for an existing health condition.
