Onions for cataracts: what you should know after age 66

Onions can be part of a healthy diet. That’s true. But eating them won’t cure cataracts. What they can do is add variety to your diet, along with other foods that promote overall health.

A simple way to include it is to prepare a fresh salad with red onion, tomato, cilantro, lime, and cooked nopales. It’s a very Mexican combination, easy to make, and great to accompany your meals.

It’s also a good idea to add leafy green vegetables, such as spinach or chard, because they provide lutein and zeaxanthin. These nutrients contribute to eye health, although they don’t replace surgery if the cataract is already advanced.

Do it step by step:

  1. Wash your vegetables well.
  2. Cut half a red onion into thin strips.
  3. Add tomato and fresh cilantro.
  4. Include cooked nopales if you have them at home.
  5. Squeeze lemon to taste and accompany your meal.

But remember this very clearly: never put onion juice, homemade mixtures, or non-sterile liquids in your eyes. It’s not worth risking your eyesight for a remedy that has no real backing.
