My Son Shaved His Head for His Sick Girlfriend—Then Her Mother Called Me from the Hospital EditoronOctober 8, 2026Leave a Comment on My Son Shaved His Head for His Sick Girlfriend—Then Her Mother Called Me from the Hospital My chest tightened. “She didn’t want anyone to see her like that,” he continued. “She said she was afraid people would look at her and only see someone who was sick.” He lifted his eyes to mine. “I wanted her to know she’s still Lily. Hair or no hair. And I didn’t want her to feel as if she had to go through that part alone.” His voice was calm, as though shaving his head had been the most obvious decision in the world. “So I told her that if she had to lose hers, she wouldn’t be the only one.” For a moment, I could not speak. I had spent seventeen years trying to teach Aaron about kindness, courage, and empathy. Yet standing before me was a young man who understood those things more deeply than I had realized. I should get some sleep.” “You’re visiting Lily after school?” “Coach said I could miss practice.” I watched him climb the stairs. For several minutes, I remained in the living room surrounded by half-folded clothes. My heart felt impossibly full. I believed shaving his head was the kindest thing Aaron could have done. I had no idea it was only the beginning. Part Three: The Call The following afternoon, I was seated at the kitchen counter trying to finish an email when my phone vibrated. Diane’s name appeared on the screen. I smiled as I answered, certain she was calling about Aaron’s shaved head. “Hi, Di. Has Aaron arrived yet? I probably should have warned you. I nearly dropped the laundry when he came downstairs. How is Lily feeling?” “Rachel.” The way she said my name stopped me. Her voice was tight, almost distant. “What’s wrong?” “You need to come to the hospital.” I straightened. “Is Lily all right?” ← Previous Page Next Page →
